Wilber Samuel Slawson, PhD Dr. Wilber Samuel Slawson, age 95, of Maryville, TN went home to be with Jesus on July 1, 2022. Wilber (Web) was born on June 24, 1927 in Oneonta, NY. During one weekend in June 1944, Web graduated from high school, turned 17, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Portsmouth (CL-102) for the duration of World War II. Web found his way to Tennessee in 1968 after teaching science and coaching in New York public schools for 14 years. He attended various colleges in New York state before attending the University of Virginia where he received his Doctorate of Education degree. Dr. Slawson taught at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1968-1992 in various capacities with the Science Education Program. While at U.T. he authored several publications and directed several programs which were funded by outside sources. Web was an active member at First United Methodist, Maryville and an avid golfer after his retirement. He would tell you his greatest accomplishments in this life were being a good husband, father, and friend. Wilber lost the love of his life Anna Lo Leach Slawson on August 10, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. They were married for 55 years and were truly a devoted couple - devoted to each other, their children and grandchildren, and to living a Christian life. He is also preceded in death by mother Ruth K. Slawson; father Wilber S. Slawson; sister and brother-in-law Eldora and Edward Sickler; mother and father-in-law Mae and Irvin Leach; brother-in-law Alan Skouby. He is survived by sons: Christopher Web (Diane) Slawson and children Kathleen, Steven, Annie, and Mary of Virginia Beach; Thomas Parker (Lana) Slawson and children Parker and Lane of Maryville; Charles Samuel (April) Slawson and son Nathaniel of Maryville. He is also survived by his three daughters from a previous marriage: Dawn Traficanti and son Bryan of Denver; Donna (John - deceased) Goldy and children Shawn and Michelle of Dingmans Ferry, PA; Dianne (Joseph) Schiavonne and children Dori and Daniel of Marlboro, NY. Additional survivors include sisters-in-law Yvonne Skouby of Columbia, MO and Jennie Peth of St. Louis, MO as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday July 5th at First United Methodist Church, Maryville with funeral service to follow. Family and friends will gather at Sherwood Memorial Gardens on Wednesday July 6th at 11:00 for the entombment service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Maryville or Shannondale of Maryville. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home.
