Obituary

Samuel Lynn Sloan, age 74, of Walland, passed away on September 6, 2025, at home while resting peacefully. Sam was born August 4, 1951, in Maryville, TN to Bill and Gaynell (Wright) Sloan.

Sam accepted salvation in Christ at an early age and continued to live in faith.  As a child he was content being raised in Detroit, but his heart remained in East Tennessee. A direct descendant of Cades Cove, he was proud of his heritage and loved spending his summers with family and friends in the mountains and foothills of Blount County.

Sam married the love of his life, Barbara (Martin) Sloan on October 17, 1969, at the home of R.M. and Delight Everett, with Rev. R.M. Everett officiating.

Sam was the owner of Hwy 73 Gulf for a number of years before going to Blount County Schools where he proudly served for 31 years.

Sam enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and strumming time away on his guitar. One of his favorites was Wildwood Flower, which was taught to him by Barbara's dad.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Rebecca Jane Sloan; grandson, Samuel Cade Sloan; mother, Gaynell (Wright) Sloan; father and mother-in-law, Fred and Marie Martin; sister, Kay Sloan; brothers-in-law, Freddy Martin and Kenny Blair; and nephew, Jayme Bishop.

Sam is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Sloan; son and daughter, Joe and Donna Sloan; grandchildren, Abby-Hope and Jozy Sloan; father and mother, Bill and Joan Sloan; brothers, Eddie Sloan, David and Stacha Sloan, Nathan and Misty Sloan; sisters, Sherry Sloan, Rae and Mike Hodge, Cindy Martin and Steve Gray, Lesa Blair, Sharon and Eddie Hall, and Janice Martin; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sam's memory to Saint Judes Hospital, Rocky Branch Community Center, or the Smoky Mountain Heritage Museum.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, September 15, 2025, at Piney Level Cemetery, Mr. Ben Cooper officiating.  Family and friends may pay their respects from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville.
