Jun 19, 1943 — Dec 4, 2022
Athens
Roma Nell Orr Oneal 79, of Athens died on December 4, 2022 from complications resulting from a brain hemorrhage. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Nell Orr; and brother, Eddie Orr. Roma is survived by her husband of 58 years, Tommy Oneal, her high school sweetheart. She leaves behind her children, Donna Oneal Wallace (John), Rick Oneal, and Steven Oneal (Sharon); grandchildren, Danielle Sutton, Ryan Wallace, Kayla Oneal Dellinger, and Steve Oneal; niece, Jena Orr Hudson (Frank); sister-in-law, Loretta Orr; special step-grandchildren, Katelynn Jack and Lexie Hardwick.
Roma, a native of Maryville, Tennessee, graduated from Lanier High School in 1961. She then went on to earn a nursing degree in 1964 from the University of Tennessee. After two years, Roma's nascent nursing career was placed on hold. She became a full-time mom and navy wife who traveled around the world with her husband. She and her family lived in Europe, Africa, Puerto Rico, and several American States, including Alaska.
Near the end of her Navy odyssey Roma earned a business degree from the University of West Florida. She then worked a couple years in Puerto Rico for Scientific Products, a medical supply company. The family then returned to Maryville, Tennessee, where Roma reentered nursing. She enjoyed a long career in nursing and served in many capacities. Roma retired in 2010 after serving 25 years as the Administrator of NHC HomeCare, Athens.
In retirement, Roma enjoyed being with her family, including her cats and dogs. She also had several hobbies including gardening, canning, wine making, reading, and cooking. Her zucchini bread, salsa, and peanut butter fudge were among family favorites. Roma also enjoyed bird watching. She always kept the backyard birdfeeders full so that there was plenty for the squirrels and other critters as well.
A special thanks to the caregivers at NHC HealthCare Athens, who cared for Roma during the final weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local animal shelter.
