Laverne Purkey Carpenter, 90, of Morningview Village, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024. She is preceded in death by husband Donald Morton Carpenter, parents Jerry and Etta Purkey, and brothers Verlin, Reuben, and Venus Purkey.
She is survived by her loving and devoted son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Dee Carpenter, adored granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Jenny and AJ Haynes, treasured great-granddaughters Faith and Hope Haynes, nephew Hank (Jackie) Purkey, nieces Maria (James) Wright and Linda (Coy) Clark, and special nephews Curt and Richard Escher.
Laverne served as a judicial administrative assistant to W. Wayne Oliver and Houston Goddard over a 40-year career in the Eastern Division of the Tennessee State Court of Criminal Appeals.
A lady of deep faith, class, and grace she was a lifelong member of Middlesettlements United Methodist Church, where she had been active over the years in the United Methodist Women, Senior Saints, and Sunday school. To everyone she met she left them better than she found them and would do what was in her power to help anyone in need.
She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her, but her example of kindness, love, grace, patience and gentleness is embedded in her family and will be carried on in each of them.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Morning View Assisted Living Center, as well as caregivers Pat Haworth, Millie Poe, and Faye Barrett for their love, devotion and care.
Funeral arrangements will be through Miller Funeral Home of Maryville. Receiving of family and friends will at Middlesettlements United Methodist Church on Monday, April 1st from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm with funeral service immediately following.
Internment will be Tuesday, April 2nd at 11:00 am at Shady Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Arthritis Foundation through their donation site at info.arthritis.org.
