Charles W. Phillips

December 27, 1941 – January 31, 2026

Charles W. Phillips, 84, passed away on January 31, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to his country and his community.

Born in 1941, Charles embarked on a distinguished 30-year career in the United States Navy, spanning from 1960 to 1990. He rose to the rank of Master Chief, a testament to his leadership and expertise. During the Vietnam War, he served with courage as an air crewman on reconnaissance missions, earning two Air Medals for his meritorious achievement in flight. His naval career culminated in his service as the Command Master Chief onboard the USS America.

Never one to sit idle, Charles began a second chapter of service immediately after his naval retirement. At the age of 50, he joined the Ocean County Sheriff's Department in New Jersey. He served as a Sheriff's Officer for 15 years, protecting and serving the county until his second retirement at age 65. He remained deeply connected to his fellow service members as a life member of the VFW, the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), and the American Legion.

Charles was a man of integrity and strength, but his greatest devotion was to his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Ann Louise Phillips, with whom he is now reunited.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Sherry Phillips; his son, Charles W. Phillips II and his fiancée Kathy; his granddaughter, Samantha Phillips and her boyfriend Scott; his sister-in-law, Mary King; his loyal feline companions, Bogie and Bob Cat; and numerous other family members and friends.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him
