Roy D. Latham, age 85, of Maryville went home to be with the Lord on October 10, 2022 after a short illness. He was a member of Alcoa Maryville Church of God. Roy's professional accomplishments included over 40 years in the Army Reserves and over 50 years in public housing development and planning. During his military career, Roy attended Army Command and General Staff College and would go on to earn the rank of Brigadier General. He would later take over as Commander of the Tennessee Defense Force Third Brigade where he proudly served for several years. Latham's career in public housing and development began in 1967 with the City of Maryville, where he served as Director of Community Housing and Development. Upon his death, he was still employed with MBI, Inc. as Justice Facilities Planner. While his professional accomplishments were numerous, to his family, he was simply "Daddy" and "Papaw" and was a true gentleman to all those that knew him. Roy was preceded in death by parents; Clarence and Flora Saultz Latham, sister; Nell Gaddis, brother; Clarence M. "Bud" Latham, Jr., niece; Brenda Gaddis, father-in-law and mother-in-law; Herman and Mamie Smelcer, brother-in-law; Jack Smelcer. He is survived by devoted wife of 63 years Louise Smelcer Latham, son; Kent Latham, daughter; Kim Kidd, grandchildren; David Latham, Brandi Cook (Jerry), Kara Latham, Ajay Kidd, great grandson Jack Cook, brother-in-law Larry Smelcer (Ronna) and sister-in-law; Annette Smelcer, several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 7:00 PM Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Paul Dyer and Pastor Ben Ward officiating. The interment will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville.
