Obituary

Barbara Ann Debuty McVay passed away at the age of 76 years while dawn was approaching on May 1, 2024. Barbara was known by all who loved her as a happy, spontaneous, kind woman with a feisty and adventurous spirit.

Barbara was born on March 4, 1948, in Clay County, NC. As a child, her family moved to Blount County, Tennessee, where she grew up. Barbara dedicated her life to loving and caring for others. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse and, together with her sister Florence, they owned and operated Quality Care Assisted Living, in Louisville, TN, caring for others as they aged.

Barbara met and married her soulmate, James Michael McVay. She loved spending time with her family and her precious dog, Toby. She enjoyed opportunities traveling, taking cruises, collecting antiques, and dancing, especially to the songs of her favorite singer, Elvis Presley. Barbara was known as a night owl, with evenings often spent with Michael and her sharing a tub of ice cream and a bowl of popcorn, watching old movies together, well into the early morning hours.

Barbara was an active member of Village Baptist Church. She was strong in her faith and a pillar of strength for her friends and family, offering guidance, encouragement, and support, no matter what challenges that they faced.

Barbara is proceeded in death by her parents, Perry Debuty and Grace Hood Debuty; James Michael, her devoted husband; and five siblings, Dollie Debuty (infant sister), Charles Debuty, Jerry Debuty, David Debuty, and Florence "Flossie" Debuty Murr.

Barbara is survived by her brother, Richard Debuty (and wife, Linda), and her sister, Lucille Debuty McCall, as well as her nieces and nephews and close friends.

Barbara's memory will be cherished, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Sarah Malia, MS, JD; the Care Managers and Care Partners from Care Around the Block; and the Nurses from Gentiva Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at Miller Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. Receiving of Friends will be held from 5-7 PM, service at 7 PM. Entombment will be held on Wednesday, May 8th, at Grandview Cemetery at 1 PM.
